Replacing wiper blades

WindshieldWiper_3_800The wiper blades on the Mirada were starting to show their age. I believe they were Anco A-24-M blades, a good quality blade, but the rubber was starting to tear on the passenger side.

I started searching for replacements,  It seems the moment you put the letters “RV” on  wiper blades,  the price goes through the roof, and I found replacements from $15 – $25 each.

The trend on replacing wiper blades seems to be, replace the entire blade assembly, not just the actual rubber wiper. Since the assemble was ok, I explored the idea of just replacing the rubber.  I found a refill that would work, for $4, for a package of 2 refill blades.

I discovered by accident that the original rubber blade can slide out of the assembly.  On the top or bottom of the blade,  pull the rubber blade away from the assembly so it clears the lock tabs.  The rubber blade will then slide out of the slot on the assembly

I measured the blade width and found it to be 0.30 mm.  This is a standard width for Anco’s “19” series blade refills, so I ordered a set (two rubbers) of Anco 19-24 refills.

I removed the two steel strips from the new rubber blade, note that about 1/4 inch of one end of the rubber is molded so there is no slot in the blade.  Since the refill blade was about 1/2 inch longer than the original,  I used a razor blade and cut off the end of the refill that was molded.

I then carefully slide the new rubber into the slot of the existing blade assembly, and we are good to go for another couple years.
