Furnace occasionally lights then kicks off

It was -17 degrees outside with the wind blowing 30-40 mph.  We were boondocking in a parking lot because the Campground we were going to stay at, we couldn’t see the roads and were afraid of driving into a ditch.

At 4am, we were wakened by a chirp from the CO alarm. It was cold in the Mirada, about 50 deg.

I checked the furnace, the blower was running slowly and there was no heat. A check of the battery and it showed 8 volts.  That’s why the CO alarm was doing an occasional chirp, low voltage. Continue reading “Furnace occasionally lights then kicks off”

RV Trimark door latch broke

We had just finished a road trip and were cleaning out the Mirada, when we went to open the door, it wouldn’t open!!

The door wasn’t locked and the handle felt normal, but it wouldn’t open. We were trapped inside.

I tried to take the inside door mechanism off  by removing the two screws, but I couldn’t get it off. I didn’t want to force or pry anything (yet) .

NOTE  – The inside cover would have come off if I had just pried a little. Continue reading “RV Trimark door latch broke”

External satellite antenna connection

satellite_1_800We usually take our satellite dish with us on our long road trips. In some of the places we stop, there isn’t TV, cell phone, or anything, so having the satellite we can at least stay somewhat connected to the outside world.

Running the dish antenna cable has always been a problem,  Like many, we initially solved the problem by using one of those ribbon type connectors and running the cable through a window and stringing the cable to the back of the satellite receiver, After our last trip, I decided I wasn’t going to do this anymore , I was going to add an external coax connector specifically for the satellite antenna.

Is your step IN or OUT?

stepsensor_3_600_1For those of us who don’t have automatic steps,  or only have a mechanical step, the most common question in the RV community has got to be:  “Is the step still out?”

Although we check and double check to make sure the step is retracted before getting under way,  this question always seems to be in the back of my mind, especially after a quick stop at a Rest Area or a fill-up at the gas station.  We can’t quite see the step in the mirrors, so to make sure,  we usually go back to the step switch and hold it in for about 5 seconds to make sure the step is retracted.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a indicator light on the dash that warns when the step is extended?  Read on… Continue reading “Is your step IN or OUT?”

Saturn Vue seats in the Mirada

seats_vue_4_800The stock seats in our Mirada are very uncomfortable.  After several hours sitting in the drivers seat,  I start developing pain in the lower back.  The passenger seat is equally bad,  and seems like its at the wrong height and angle.

We purchased a used Saturn Vue last winter to fix up and tow behind the Mirada.  The Saturn seats seemed very comfortable with many adjustments to tweak the seat exactly the way we wanted them.  The thought struck me that the Vue seats would be very nice in the Mirada.

Replace awning fabric

Awning_1_800Although the awning was in good shape, at the very top that’s always exposed to the sun, the fabric was brittle and cracked and could rip very easily. It was time for a new awning.

Getting the correct size – All the awning fabric  sites I visited on the web pointed out how  to measure the old awning and warned NOT to measure the fabric, but to measure the distance between the awning vertical support rods.  On mine, the distance of the vertical supports was exactly 18 ft.

I searched the web and chose Sun Wave  as the replacement awning provider. Their price was very reasonable and they had my awning in stock.

Beat the heat – Improving air flow from the air conditioner ceiling unit

AC_Vent_4_800My Mirada came with an non-ducted rooftop Dometic 13.5 BTU AC unit. When I’m standing outside, I can barely hear the unit running, But when I’m inside, it makes so much wind noise that I swear a 747 is taking off. With all that wind noise, Why can’t I fell the air moving? When I put my hand up against the two air louvers,  it just didn’t seem like I was getting the air flow that it should.

Last week I was prepping the roof for re-coating and had to remove the AC unit.   When I took the inside ceiling unit off,  I looked carefully at the inside to see if  there was any airflow obstructions. Continue reading “Beat the heat – Improving air flow from the air conditioner ceiling unit”

Hood hinge attach point repair

HoodRepair_7_800While traveling last year, the hood hinge on the drivers side broke. This is the piece the hood swings on and is mounted just below the windshield on the inside of the front end of the Mirada.  I took the hinge off,  found a shop that welded for me, put it back together and we were on our way.

This weekend,  I noticed a lot of play in the hood.  I was thinking that it had something to do the the broken hinge from last year,  but that repair was still solid.

Looking at the hood,  the drivers side metal hinge mount point was soft and flexing. The passenger side was solid Continue reading “Hood hinge attach point repair”

Sound deadening and heat shield

HoodSoundproof_1_600I read recently where someone had installed sound proofing and heat barrier material to their doghouse, and it made a considerable difference in both heat  and sound.

On the Mirada, I don’t recall objectionable sound or heat from the engine compartment.  The engine noise was there,  but not  loud.  As for heat,  we do the majority of our travel in winter and it seems like its always cold on the drivers side, yet hot on the passenger side.  I could put my hand on the engine compartment, it wasn’t hot, but seemed like it was warm.
